The History of the churchyard Bier Trolley

The Christ Church Bier Trolley was made by Dottridge Bros Ltd at the Dorset Works, East Road and City Road, London in the early 1900’s. In late 2015 it was damaged and in a very poor condition and Martyn Herbert, a church member, offered to restore it as a project in memory of his wife , Maggie. The trolley was basically  sound but had been neglected for many years. Martyn stripped all the woodwork of paint and removed all the rust from the metalwork and spoked wheels. A  wooden stretcher was repaired and broken legs and handles were made and re-fitted using specially made steel brackets to support the legs. The woodwork was sanded and coated with at least four coats of yacht varnish. All metalwork was primed and repainted. New replacement leather straps were ordered from a mainland saddler and fitted to complete the restoration. The trolley is now back in use and housed in a specially built shed.
